So went for a ride yesterday with my 2016 kodiak 700 se, alongside a bunch of canams.... Lol anyways, I ended up getting stuck in mud and I had a hard shift to reverse.... I feel like in the past I've had hard shifts in the mud too.... Anyways I got out and my shifter was working. A little while later, I didn't have park anymore. Shift lever goes there but machine stayed in reverse. I cycled the gears and ended up staying in HIGH now. Shifter handle can hit every gear option but machine stays in high. Planning to rip it open where the linkage goes into the tranny but any ideas and help would be appreciated!!

If you want to dig into it a little bit deeper here are a couple of pages out of the repair manual on the shift lever.

I wrote this response to you, yesterday.

"It is recommended to start by adjusting the shift rod. Then look at how solid the connections are.

I have a 19 Kodi that the tie rod end connections were worn causing shifting issues. The mounts on the rod ends are peened into the the brackets. Mostly not shifting into low properly it would pop out if I wasn't careful. Bought new parts 9 and 21. Not that expensive and not to hard to install. Did fix the issue.

The timing issue most likely would only cause an issue in one direction. Like only park or only low not both.
"

I need to clarify part of the above, "The mounts on the rod ends are peened into the the brackets " this is vague.

The mounting studs on the tie rod ends and attached to the shifting brackets by peening over the end of the studs. I found that the tie rod studs were worn badly causing them to be loose in the brackets. The looseness added to the spec length caused the true shifting rod adjustment to be too long. It was only shifting in to low part way causing it to pop out of gear.

Ok here's the problem. Some how, the toothed "shift levers" became out of time.

Here's a quick video I threw together showing what happened

Great video and Good job finding your problem!

My goal is to retime it. Will focus on that sometime this week/end (hunny do list first LOL). I noticed that milky oil too, so an oil change is on the list asap as well. I want to check the spark plug and wire while I'm digging around too.

When I hit a puddle too hard, a handful of times over the years it's made the machine sputter and die if you give it too much throttle until it "dries out". I did that the same day this shifter went downhill. Wondering if I get water in somehow then or maybe my plug wire is broken/bad cap on the plug etc. Anyways long story short, I would love to snorkel the machine but again, (I understand the risks etc etc etc), I'm the one Yamaha in a group of canam xmr's and I love being the odd one out
