In the past 6 months or so my 4x4 has been intermittently coming on usually at or near start up. This would cause my switch to not actually turn it back off so I would be stuck in 4x4. I could hear the actuator so I know it was actually in 4x4. I know this is a known problem as their is a TSB out for it but I found this video on YT
and figured I would give it a shot before trying to contact a dealer. Seriously only took 10 minutes and everything works properly. I have no affiliation to that link but if anyone else is out of warranty and dealer doesnt want to help them I might try doing what is shown in the video as it worked for me. My 4 wd switch was acting up with symptoms as described by the OP. I was able to take it apart, cleaned the contacts, put a little dielectric grease on them, reassembled and it's been good for 2 years now. This is the video from 501 Parts I found helpful,
and he is a great guy and also sells the switches if you need a replacement.
