I have a 2021 Kodiak 700 with about 35 hours on it. For a while it would start randomly, but now it won't start at all. I just replaced the battery, and it did not help. When I push the go button it clicks once each time...no spinning, no rapid clicking and no turning over...just one click. I'm thinking it is the solenoid (due to the slow death) or the starter, but I wanted to check here first to see if the hive can shorten my guessing time/game. Solenoid seems like easiest nextstep, since I still have it apart from battery replacement.

Thank you!

You might start with a voltage reading at your starter when you hit the start button, you need to see that voltage when the starter is trying to start, you can accomplish a similar test by watching to see if the headlights dim when the starter tries to engage. If you have full voltage and or the lights do not dim, then you are not getting sufficient power to the starter. A bad starter or bushes in the starter can cause what you describe. You need to know if your full voltage is getting to the starter first.

You started your comment by saying that this was a problem that got worse, so from that, I might lean to say the starter might have failed. That might be the brushes, and a light tapping on the starter, might jar the brushes readjust and if the starter works that is a very good clue of starter issues.

Thank you for all that! I will follow those directions. I did buy a solenoid from Amazon. The voltage on the display is a bit better with the new battery, but it sounds like you are saying that it may not be getting to the starter.

There were a number of early Kodiaks that had bad starter from the factory, but that ended in 2018.

But that doesn't say that there isn't a bunch of other bad starters out there.

Checking on the voltage to the starter would be the first step in isolating the problem.

On the relay/fuse block from Amazon, pay attention to what connects to what. There are some on there that the wiring is backwards.

You're welcome and thank Jim for a great link on that starter. Good luck and let us know how the replacement goes. As Jim says, we have not seen the newer units have bad starters, and I wish that was not a problem.

Not long ago, you could just buy a new brush plate, (that was a part with new brushes and the mounts that they fit in) but if could it still was more costly than these new starters, which are possibly better than the original.
