My dealer quoted $250ish. Thats ridiculous for what is really getting done. If your somewhat mechanically inept, get the $75 service manual and do it yourself. You will also need the oil filter cap wrench for $30. The only things you are doing on the first service is dropping the oil and filter, cleaning the air filter, checking the differential fluids (I would change them too) and checking antifreeze levels and valve clearance. Its all straightforward once you get the plastic off the bike. If you do all your maintenance, just keep receipts and records.

Did you find a source for the service manual? Is there a PDF copy of it you can share?
Here is a source for a hard copy. No PDF's yet.http://www.yamahapubs.com
I have yet to see anything show up, still looking for one for my own sake and if I find it, i'll post it up here.

Come to find out, you are correct. The new 708 engine unlike the 2015 and earlier engine has "shim under bucket" valves. The old engine had screw adjusters. The advantage to the new style is that the inspection interval is spaced way out. They just hardly ever need adjusting. The disadvantage is that they require quite a bit more labor. The screw type need regular inspection intervals, but are far easier to do.
Hi Liveto99

Can i ask you what you paid to have the work done.
They want $615.00 for everything here in Michigan
Just looking to see if that is a good price.

What dealer in MI asked for that amount? I just want to stay away from them.
Get an itemized list with all work that he's supposed to do for that amount. If it includes the Valve clearance check , that may be the reason. Otherwise it should be 1 .5- 2 hours of labor plus "the fluids" as they call them : oil and lubricants and oil filter.
I came here to post because I was just charged $150 thinking it was high. $615.00 ??? There's no way that's right.
Anybody have recommendation's on their oil brand.
My yamaha dealer in PA said they charge 100$ for an hour and a half of work, which is about how long i think it should take, plus fluid and filter, 150$ is right. If you can do it yourself you'll save a 100$ depending on the cost of fluid you buy.
When I had my Kodiak in the shop for the recall work I had them do the first service and it ran me like $140.
$130 at my Dealer...

I really think you got duped looking at all of the average prices here.. Seems to be $150. I sure hope you kept that receipt because you're going to need to take it right back to em'
